There’s still time to put together your team for the Uganda Quiz Night on Nov. 5. Invite your colleagues—or friends and neighbours—to form a team and then challenge teams from other departments to see who wins bragging rights as the winning team or the team with the most creative answer.

Co-hosted by the Rotary Club of Coquitlam Sunrise, the Quiz Night is a fundraiser for the Douglas College Uganda Project as well as literacy projects at home and abroad supported by Rotary. Given that the event falls on Guy Fawkes Night (Remember, remember, the fifth of November, Gunpowder, treason and plot …) one can expect some incendiary questions as part of the quiz.

Individual players pay $20, or a team of six players costs $100. The action takes place Tuesday, Nov. 5 at the Coquitlam Campus from 7-10pm. Activities include a silent auction, cash bar and a fun-filled evening led by Quiz Master Richard Stewart, mayor of the City of Coquitlam. Students who have been to Uganda will be on hand to share their experiences. Register here.

New Sport Science lab helps Douglas College students study movement

Sport Science students at Douglas College are getting a leg up when it comes to studying how athletes move.

A new movement analysis lab has opened at the New Westminster campus as part of an expansion of the College’s Sport Science facilities.

The lab gives students a dedicated space to explore biomechanics using high-tech equipment and to gain experience with lab-based research.

The centerpiece of the facility is the force-plate system, a tool used to measure athletic movements such as balancing, jumping or running.

When research subjects stand on or move across two force-sensitive panels embedded in the floor, data about their movements is captured by computer.

This data allows researchers to analyze, for example, how a person shifts their weight when swinging a golf club.

The findings can be used to help athletes improve their performance.

“It’s exhilarating to think about the hands-on opportunities our students will have with the equipment, for both teacher-directed and student-directed projects,” says Lara Duke, Sport Science Instructor.

“The space and equipment open a lot of doors to applied research and potentially to more partnerships involving that research with groups in the community,” Duke says.

The lab, which also features video-analysis equipment, will be used by a range of Sport Science students, from those in introductory courses to those conducting their own upper-level research.

The new facility complements the College’s existing Sport Science laboratory, which already provides students with access to equipment used to test fitness levels.

To celebrate the new lab, Douglas College is inviting the community to an open house on Friday, Jan. 17 from 1-3pm.

“We spent the fall working out the kinks with our new movement analysis lab. Now we’re ready to welcome the public for a visit,” says Brian Storey, Sport Science Chair.

As a fun activity, visitors to the open house can pick up a golf club, hockey stick, or baseball bat and have their movements measured by students using the lab’s equipment.

The open house event takes place in the lab, room 2223, at the New Westminster campus.

More information about the Sport Science program is available here.

A public talk at Douglas College will explore the role darker personality traits such as narcissism and psychopathy play in the mating success of some men.

Students in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences selected Peter Jonason, an expert on personality psychology, to take part in the College's new Students’ Choice Speaker Series.

“Dr. Jonason’s talk should be fun, informative and a bit provocative,” says Laura Dane, Coordinator of the Bachelor of Arts in Applied Psychology program at Douglas College.

“He offers a new perspective on the dark side of human nature, suggesting traits our society deems undesirable may actually benefit individuals in work or social situations.”

The free talk, “How bad boys get the girls,” takes place on Feb. 19 from 2:30-3:30pm in the Laura C. Muir Performing Arts Theatre on Douglas College’s New Westminster campus.

The Students’ Choice Speaker Series is sponsored by Knowledge First Financial.

Douglas College pollinator study looks at bees in the garden

A new Douglas College study on pollinators is looking into what’s buzzing in local gardens.

The college’s UNIBUG (User Network for Insect Biology in the Urban Garden) team is working with community volunteers on the research.

For the study, the volunteers will place small, homemade bee houses in their gardens to attract the insects.

The volunteers will then periodically monitor the bee activity, from spring to fall, and report their findings.

“I think it’s inherently valuable to look into this,” says Veronica Wahl, UNIBUG Coordinator.

“Pollinators are really important. We depend on them for our flowers. We depend on them for our food.”

“This project is about contributing to our knowledge of what the wild bee populations are like around this region. There are a lot of things we don’t know.”

The study isn’t looking at the common honey bee. Instead, the focus is on a variety of solitary bees known as leaf cutter and mason bees.

“They don’t make honey. They almost never sting people. In nature they nest in hollow stalks,” Wahl says.

The researchers are able to take advantage of that preference for laying eggs in hollow stalks to attract the bees.

The bee houses volunteers place in their gardens will be filled with clusters of paper tubes. The idea is to simulate the kind of nesting spots the bees seek in nature.

“To the bees, this looks like a hollow stalk and so they use the tubes to lay their eggs inside,” Wahl says.

While bees are the focus, the UNIBUG team will also study what other pollinators like hummingbirds and butterflies are up to in gardens.

The pollinator research adds to UNIBUG’s existing work investigating how predatory and parasitic insects can control garden pests.

For those who want to learn more about the project, the 3rd-annual UNIBUG forum takes place on Saturday, March 29.

The free, public event is being held in room 2201 on the Douglas College New Westminster campus from 10am-12pm.
