Are you having trouble attracting students to your events?

We can help.

The Marketing and Communications Office (MCO) has a system that makes it easier for employees in all areas to get the word out about their College events.

You can now submit your event information online, using a simple form. The information goes directly to MCO, who will add your event to the college-wide events calendar – a great way to get the word out to students.

The college-wide calendar is used to create the list for the Events section on the Douglas home page. We also use it as the basis for our weekly “This week at Douglas” blog posts, which are in turn posted on the Douglas College Twitter and Facebook accounts. Plus, it’s embedded on the douglife.ca website. With all these different channels, your event info will be seen by hundreds if not thousands of students.

See douglascollege.ca/events to check out the college-wide events calendar and submission information.

Note: this is a student-focused calendar, so only events that are open to all or the majority of students will be accepted. Professional Development events and other employee-only events are promoted separately.

Henry Waack

The Douglas College community is mourning the loss of Henry Waack, a founding member of the Music Department and a much-loved teacher and performer.

He passed away on Oct. 4 at age 85.

In 1970, Waack moved to New Westminster with his family to join a newly established Douglas College. Once there, he played a major role in shaping the development of the music department.

During a career spanning many decades, Waack directed more than 70 musicals across Western Canada.

Upon retiring in 1993, he established the Henry Waack Music Scholarship which supports talented musicians at Douglas College. He also continued teaching and performing.

A funeral is set for Friday, Oct. 11, at 11 a.m. at the Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, 701 6th Street, New Westminster.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked for donations to the Henry Waack Music Scholarship at Douglas College.

Donations can be sent to the Douglas College Foundation by mail (P.O. Box 2503, New Westminster, B.C., V3L 5B2, Canada) or by phone (604 777 6176).

Douglas College to hold Oct. 17 earthquake ShakeOut drill

You’re working at your desk when suddenly the room begins to sway or everything begins shaking. It’s an earthquake. What do you do?

On Thursday, Oct. 17, in an effort to prepare for a potential earthquake, Douglas College students, employees and visitors, along with thousands of other British Columbians, will participate in the Great British Columbia ShakeOut.

“Seismic experts tell us that we can expect a major destructive earthquake in B.C.," says Nancy Constable, Director of Safety, Security and Risk Management. “We don’t know when it might hit. This drill is about practising how to protect ourselves when it does.”

What to do

Around 10:22am on Thursday, Oct. 17, at the New Westminster and Coquitlam campuses, a public announcement will be broadcast advising we are about to start the Great British Columbia ShakeOut earthquake drill.

When you are advised that the drill is starting, carefully drop to the ground, take cover under a desk or table and hold on. If you are not near a desk or table, or are physically unable to drop, cover and hold on, then cover your head and neck with your arms and crouch in a corner, away from any glass. Information for persons with disabilities is available here.

The drill will last around 90 seconds.

More information about the Great British Columbia ShakeOut is available here.
